Hi girls,

I'm compiling the next article in the "How to set up a greeting card business" series and it's going to be on Pricing. Let me know if you can how much your cards retail for - that is - what is the final price that the customer pays for them (what you charge for them if you sell directly or what they sell for in shops)

And...if you could as well let me know whether you sell through shops or direct to customers yourself. That would be fab!! Many thanks.

a bit of a complicated answer here.....

most of my orders are just from my parents or a close family friend - i havent really gotten them *out* there. and so far i havent charged for those (i would if it were anyone else)

I do sell tailor made cards via an internet forum - part proceeds to animal rescue which is why that is acceptable. the prices range from 3.50 to 4.50 which is very very low, i get no profit i only cover materials. i keep that price low so as to attract people and as its fr rescue..... and the orders are here and there so it doesnt kill me timewsie

i have sold a few packs in the same fashion - problem with packs is people are not going to fork out for them. i kept the design very simple and sold 2 sets of 5 c3 cards for 7 euro per set - but it was a simple yet effective designs

when i figure out what to charge i consider what they cost to make and then add extra for the charity part
but if/when i sell to family etc i'd most likely charge 3.50 to 5 depending on what i do. most of my cards are standard quarter a4, DL and some c3.

i did once make an a4 sized card - i had to print 2 pics at a photo kiosk though. i sold that for 7 euro but again it was the rescue thing.

i know of a woman who charges 4.50 per card regardless of what it is for, what she uses etc.

I'm selling mine for €3 in one shop and i get €2 from that. They are a6 cards. The same cards sell in another shop for €3.80 as that was the cheapest card she stocked and she didn't want to undercut anybody else. I personally think that's expensive. Must pop down tomorrow to see if any have actually sold - only started selling there about 2 weeks ago.

My cards are usually €4.50 and then they go up depending on size, work involved and personalization. For my xmas cards only I also have packs of 4 - 6 ranging from €12 - €15.

I mainly sell via friends, neighbours & relatives but I also have a web site and my local pharmacy also sells my cards for me with no commission.

The local shop where I used to work sell my cards (large ones ) for 3.99 and from that I get 3.50 (they were VERY generous) If I'm doing a card for a customer (that is personalised with name etc on it ) I charge €5.00. I think that's fair enough for personalisation but I don't think they would pay anymore and those cards are ALWAYS large cards. My customers don't seem to want the small ones personalised. In the shop I do stock some personalised ones too they sell between €2.40 and €2.99.

She's given up doing her local market, but last year my sis was selling mine for €3.50 from which she took 50 cents comission. She reckoned they could have gone for €4.00, but I wasn't looking for profit, just an outlet for my cards and money to buy new stash .

I sell my 'general' cards for €3 each or 4 for €10 and all my profits go to Cancer charities.
I sell my Christmas cards at 6 for €10 and all my profits go to SVP.
I sell mainly to family, friends, neighbours and by word of mouth.
If any local organisations are having a fund raising event I usually give them a box of mixed cards rather than a donation and let them choose whether to sell them individually or include the whole box in the raffle.

I sell mine for 2.30 at the Country Market and at home, I'm doing 3 fairs as well in the next 2 weeks,and I'll charge 3 euro, but it is for charity. I sell to shops wholesale for 2 euro and they sell for 3.50 or more. I tend to make A5 cards as it is easier to stick to the same size for shops. I do personalised cards and the price depends on what materials I've used and the size.

My sis is my biggest customer and insists on paying €5 a card. I don't charge more even if its big or took me a whole weekend. They are always personalised. I have gotten a few orders from her friend who has seen or recieved one of my cards and she also pays €5. My Dad lives on the Aran Islands and he rang me with an order for 5 personalised cards a while back. When he asked for price later, I asked was €20 too much (was going to give a discount for multible cards) he laughed and handed me the envelope from the woman, €50!!!! She wouldn't hear of taking anything back. Said it saved her a trip to the mainland where she wouldn't find cards like that anyway!!
It's tricky, this pricing issue, but if someone wants something special to show they care I don't think €5 is unreasonable. HTH

Now I have an order for 20 Christmas cards and no way would I charge that. They will be as Gaeilge but not personalised and probably pretty simple, so about €2.

I sell to the shops at €2 and they charge €4.50 (where am I going wrong) if I was selling direct I would sell for €3 but that is A6 size as I dont do larger ones usually. After that if it's personalised like Kate I would charge €5.

Still never going to become a millionaire from it but it helps pay for new stash

I sell them for an average of €3.00, I don't even like charging that much, I feel guilty, don't know why! I don't charge for my time on making the cards, once I more or less recover the cost of what it cost to make the card then I am happy I feel if I start charging for my time, it will take the enjoyment out of it, and thats the last thing I want.

I supply a few places and they nomally leave it to my to price, they ask for €100's or so worth of cards, and leave it to me to judge what I think the quanity and size should be, I would normally make up a batch of 45 or so A6 size for that price.

To be honest when I give an order to a customer I have no more interest in what they pay me because I am just dying to know if they are happy with them, that is my payment, once I know they are pleased then so am I!!!!

All my cards are A5 and personlised.

I have one friend who gets loads of orders for me. I sell to her for 5.50 and she sells them to her customers for 7.00 euro

If I sell direct, I charge 7.00 euro.
Boxed cards are 10-15 euro depending on the work involved.

I have an order now for 15 thank you cards in C6, which I'll probably sell for 2.50 or so.

When I started two years ago, I charged 5 euro and unfortunately, a lot of those customer have returned for more and have assumed the price is the same. I kind of don't mind because they are very good customers. But I have decided, that come January, I'll be telling them that the cards will be individually priced!

It's so funny hearing about this topic (ie pricing). Again and again I hear "I don't want to charge too much, I don't like to take money", and don't get me wrong, I'm exactly the same. I'd rather get great feedback on a card than take money. My sis is the savvy one in the family, only for her I'd still be doing them for free.
But next time ye are in Athena's or the Birthday Shop or any big card retailer shop girls, look at the prices. For an "off the computer, out of a printer" card you are looking at close to €5, especially if it's Hallmark. I have nothing against them, I just think that we should not be so critical of ourselves and begrudge ourselves a bit of recouperation costs. I know that €5 might sound a lot for some cards, but for others it's a bargain, so I even it out at that price.
And, I know for a fact that some people can get a bit snitty when you give a shop bought one after giving a handmade one I forgot to make a card for a wedding I was going to so I went and bought one, and found out that she was really looking forward to my card as she'd seen a few I'd made for other people....

1.60 to the shops that sell them as they look for their mark up and pay tax etc( ) so they sell them for 3 euro. If they buy in big numbers I produce them so I profit and they are not too time consuming.

Cards for friends and family are usually more detailed and I charge 3 - 3.50.
